About the Feedback Line

The Feedback Line was a service pioneered by the ABC NZ's Auckland Branch in 1988. Callers phoned in to hear a bulletin that was updated weekly. If they waited until the end of the bulletin, there was the opportunity to leave a comment, which could be played on next week's Feedback Line. This ensured that the service was not only a source of news, but also of lively debate which the Branch was able to take into account when making decisions.

The service was successfully provided by the ABC NZ's governing body at a national level in 1995.

Originally at branch level, cassette-based answerphones were used. There was a limit on the length of the bulletins, and high quality recording equipment needed to be used to produce an acceptable product.

This all changed with the arrival of the then Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind's Telephone Information Service (now Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind), on which local Feedback Lines, plus the National Feedback Line, rent space.

The Telephone Information Service (TIS for short) allows high quality recordings to be made via a touch-tone telephone. The caller can skip around the bulletin, and instead of waiting for the end of the bulletin before they can leave a message, the caller simply presses a button on their phone at any time.
