The Association of Blind Citizens of New Zealand (ABC NZ) ensures that we, blind and vision-impaired citizens, speak for ourselves with Government, service providers, and the community in general. We do this through communication, advocacy, and peer support. ABC NZ AdvocacyABC NZ
ABC NZ CommunicationABC NZ's annual conference is our supreme governing body, bringing together delegates from across New Zealand to address relevant issues for blind and vision impaired people, and to make policy decisions. Branch general meetings are held every three months or so. ABC NZ keeps in touch with local and central Government on a wide variety of issues, such as:
We work with businesses, to help them understand how services can be more accessible to us. For example, we are working with banks and influencing the introduction of accessible ATMs, contributing to standards that should ensure EFTPOS and other electronic banking services are genuinely accessible to blind people. ABC NZ publishes the quarterly Focus magazine, sent out to members in their chosen format (large print, braille, cassette etc). Branches also publish their own newsletters regularly. ABC NZ Peer SupportAs well as framing and supporting our political activities, involvement with ABC NZ also provides blind and vision impaired people with opportunities to get together, support each other, make new friendships, and share new ideas. Branches run a variety of social and recreational activities to meet the needs of members in their areas.
