ABC NZ Achievements

Since 1945, the Association of Blind Citizens of New Zealand (ABC NZ or Association) has helped improve the quality of life for blind and vision impaired New Zealanders.

Some of our achievements are:

  • Braille Signs inside Taxis.
  • The Great Barrier Brief -  publication that records the Association's register of issues, indicative of the barriers faced by blind and vision impaired New Zealanders.
  • Accessible (Talking) Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs)
  •  "Quest for Equity", published in 1995 (available from ABC NZ National Office) chronicles the Association's history.
  • Payment of Social Welfare Benefits to blind people without regard to their personal earnings.
  • The right of blind people to have a person of their own choice assist them when voting at parliamentary and local body elections.
  • Measures to improve pedestrian safety - produced a video entitled "Who's the Footpath for?"
  • Travel concessions.
  • Free, portable Directory Assistance throughout the country.
  • Influencing policy through submissions to local and central government.
